Caitlin W. Clevenger, PhD, ABPP

Founder, Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Board Certified in Addiction Psychology

I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with thoughtful, high-functioning adults who want deeper psychological work, not just listening, reflection, and quick fixes or surface-level coping strategies.

Many of my clients are successful in their careers but are privately struggling with burnout, identity questions, distressing relationship patterns, or major life transitions. They often feel frustrated by therapy that focuses only on symptom management or quick decision-making, rather than helping them truly understand their deeper conflicts and unhelpful patterns.

My approach begins with a comprehensive, therapeutic assessment involving validated questionnaires and interviews to develop the full picture of your life and goals. This assessment ends with a co-formulated treatment plan to guide our future sessions. In our therapy sessions, I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT, living life by your true values) and psychodynamic therapy (identifying unconscious forces in your emotions and behaviors) to help people gain insight into long-standing patterns and build a life that feels meaningful and sustainable.

What it's like in the virtual therapy room with me: I work hard to make therapy not feel too difficult for you. As a psychologist who has been in therapy herself, I understand the discomfort that can come with being in the "hot seat." If you're someone who talks a lot, I let you talk and gently guide you where I think we need to go. If I need to be more direct, I'll be more direct. If you're someone who is slow to warm up, I'll step in and ask questions and help you get where you want to go. Once we find our groove, our work will feel more conversational, not stilted or formulaic. I will pay close attention to what you're saying verbally and also what you are saying nonverbally. I'll observe this back to you, to help develop insight into unconscious thoughts and feelings. I check in periodically about your treatment goals, what's working/not working, and how you're feeling about the work in general. In these check-ins, we discuss frequency and duration of sessions, because the goal of therapy is for you to no longer need therapy. We actively work towards a positive termination of therapy.

Areas of Specialization

Therapy for High-Achieving Professionals and Helping Professionals

Many of the people I work with are attorneys, psychologists, physicians, academics, and other helping professionals who are used to functioning at a high level.

On their CVs and resumes, their lives appear successful and on the right track. Internally, they may feel:

  • chronically overworked

  • unable to say no

  • responsible for everyone else

  • emotionally exhausted or burnt out

  • unhappy

  • needing alcohol or other substances to relax/feel normal

Together, we examine the deeper patterns that lead to overfunctioning, perfectionism, and difficulty setting boundaries. We work towards making realistic changes that make your daily efforts sustainable and not draining.

Burnout and Major Career Transitions

Similarly, I frequently work with professionals who are questioning their career path or navigating major transitions like:

  • stepping down from leadership roles

  • leaving a profession entirely

  • redefining success and identity outside of work

  • recovering from professional burnout

These transitions often raise deeper questions about identity, values, and purpose. Therapy can help you clarify what truly matters and make decisions that align with your life rather than external expectations. You may even decide to stay in your profession, but just in a different way. We find the path that works the best for you. I have left my "dream career" (Scientist and Clinician at an R1 University), so I understand personally the difficulty of this kind of decision and deeply value helping you make the decision that works best for you and you alone.

Therapy for Therapists, Physicians, and Other Helping Professionals

Helping professionals often struggle to find a therapist who understands the unique pressures of being the helper.

My clients frequently include:

  • psychologists and therapists

  • physicians and healthcare professionals

  • attorneys

  • academics

  • graduate students and trainees

In therapy, you can step out of the role of caretaker/problem-solver and focus on your own internal life, relationships, and well-being.

Perinatal and Postpartum Therapy

Becoming a parent is a significant psychological and physical transition. Even when deeply wanted, pregnancy and postpartum life can bring unexpected challenges.

I work with mothers, fathers, and nonbinary parents navigating:

  • pregnancy and postpartum adjustment

  • identity changes after becoming a parent

  • anxiety, guilt, and overwhelm

  • balancing career and parenthood

  • relationship shifts after having children

Therapy can help you integrate the experience of becoming a parent while staying connected to the person you were before. I have experienced pregnancy, childbirth, and raising a child myself. These experiences help me to anticipate and empathize with some challenges you may (or may not) face.

LGBTQ+ Identity Exploration and Coming Out Later in Life

Many people come to therapy when they begin exploring parts of their identity that have been hidden or suppressed.

I work with individuals who are:

  • coming out later in life

  • exploring sexual orientation or gender identity

  • navigating changes in relationships after coming out

  • integrating LGBTQ identity into family, career, or parenting roles

My work is affirming, exploratory, and non-judgmental, allowing you the space to understand yourself more fully and make decisions at your own pace. I view gender and sexual orientation as unique to the individual, and these identities can be fluid. My agenda is for you to discover yourself and how you want to express that (not for me to tell you who you are).

Therapy for People Who Want Depth, Not Band-Aid Solutions

Some people feel frustrated with therapy that focuses only on quick coping strategies.

My work is often a good fit for individuals who want:

  • deeper self-understanding

  • insight into longstanding emotional patterns

  • meaningful and lasting change

  • therapy that goes beyond symptom management

Many clients begin with a comprehensive psychological evaluation to clarify diagnoses, understand personality patterns, and develop a targeted treatment plan before starting therapy. This process often allows therapy to move more efficiently and with greater depth.

My Approach to Therapy

My work integrates several evidence-based approaches:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to increase psychological flexibility and help you act in line with your values

  • Psychodynamic therapy to understand deeper emotional and relational patterns

  • Comprehensive psychological assessment to clarify diagnoses and guide treatment

Rather than focusing only on symptom reduction, therapy is aimed at helping you understand yourself more fully and create a life that feels meaningful and aligned with your values.
